What if the key to global growth was already within your reach, just waiting for you to translate it? On a recent episode of Strategy Talks, I had the pleasure of speaking with Alexander Murauski, CEO of Alconost, about how AI-powered localization strategies can help businesses scale globally without losing their unique voice.

If you’ve ever considered expanding into new markets or wondered how to maintain brand authenticity across cultures, this conversation is packed with insights you won’t want to miss.

Why AI-Powered Localization Is the Growth Hack You Need

When I asked Alexander to set the stage for our conversation, he explained:

“At Alconost, we help companies translate their content into 120 languages using native speakers and professional linguists. It’s not just about translation—it’s about delivering cultural relevance and quality.”

That’s where AI comes in. While AI alone can’t capture every nuance, it can dramatically speed up and streamline the localization process, especially when paired with human expertise.

The Risks of Relying on AI-Only Translation

It’s tempting to think AI can handle everything. After all, tools like Google Translate or ChatGPT can generate translations instantly. But as I shared during our talk:

“As a native Dutch speaker living in the U.S. for 37 years, I know firsthand that literal translations often miss the cultural references that give language its true meaning.” ~Dorien

Alexander emphasized that:

  • Cultural references, idioms, and expressions don’t always translate well.

  • Crowdsourced or AI-only translations often lack accuracy and consistency.

  • Professional localization requires native-speaking linguists who understand the product and its audience.

How to Build a Smart AI-Powered Localization Strategy

Alexander broke down how smart localization starts with early planning and the right infrastructure:

  1. Start with internationalization – Design your product with multiple languages in mind from the outset. This includes flexible date formats, font choices, and UI elements.

  2. Use a localization platform – Managing translations through email or spreadsheets quickly becomes unmanageable. A dedicated platform keeps everything organized and scalable.

  3. Adopt AI with human-in-the-loop workflows – Let AI handle the heavy lifting, but rely on professional linguists to review, refine, and ensure cultural appropriateness.

The ROI of AI-Powered Localization for Global Growth

One of my favorite parts of our chat was exploring the ROI of localization. Alexander shared:

“Localization can often be treated as a quick win or growth hack. For example, one client translated their pregnancy tracking app into 25 languages and saw the investment pay off within weeks.”

He explained that while marketing and sales strategies play a role, localization opens up whole new markets with relatively small investments, especially if you choose the right languages (think French, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese).

AI-Powered Localization Goes Beyond Language

Localization isn’t just about words. Alexander highlighted:

  • The importance of culturally appropriate images, colors, and symbols.

  • Adapting currency and payment methods to local norms.

  • Avoiding pitfalls like using national flags incorrectly or mismatched date formats.

As I noted during our conversation:

“When you get these details right, you build trust. And trust is everything when you’re entering new markets.”

How AI Is Fueling Faster Global Expansion

Alexander explained that AI has disrupted the localization industry, but not by replacing humans. Instead, it’s become a powerful tool for:

  • Speeding up translation timelines.

  • Reducing costs (though only by about 50%, not the 90% many expect).

  • Helping linguists focus on reviewing and refining rather than starting from scratch

Ready to Hack Your Global Growth?

If you’re thinking about scaling internationally, don’t let localization be an afterthought. Plan, build the right infrastructure, and embrace AI as a tool, not a replacement for human expertise. As Alexander reminded us:

“Quality localization starts with product design and ends with happy customers in every market.”
